After leaving nearly 20 years ago, the Maersk Group has returned to the Port of Baltimore.

This is a huge day for port, the city of Baltimore, the state of Maryland and our partners at Maersk. The global shipping industry is watching Baltimore.- Maryland Transportation Secretary

According to reports, Maersk Line will operate three weekly container services, which are expected to deliver an estimated 31,000 new containers per year on routes to the Far East, Mediterranean and northern Europe.

Aside from seeing a strong rise in regional demand, the Port of Baltimore is also attractive because it can accommodate shipping vessels that can pass through the Panama Canal when it is completed in 2016.

State officials have reported that the Port of Baltimore generates approximately 15,000 direct jobs, while about 108,000 jobs in Maryland are linked to the port's shipping activities. Moreover, the port is responsible for $3 billion in personal wages and salary, and more than $300 million in state and local taxes.
